Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui)

Butterfly of the Month May 2024

Written by Madeline Simon and Stephanie Holbrook

Let’s talk about Painted Lady butterflies, nature’s nomads. Unlike most migratory species, these butterflies don’t have a ‘season’ for their travels. Some scientists speculate that heavy weather events like El Niño could be directing their movements, as it might affect the availability of host plants.

Now, brace yourself for a fun fact: the Painted Lady butterfly is the world’s most widely distributed butterfly. What sets it apart from the crowd, though? It’s all about their life cycle and eating habits. After hatching from their eggs within a few days, these little caterpillars eat about 200 times their weight! They then enter the pupa stage, transforming into the beautiful butterflies we know and love. But life in the fast lane comes at a cost – their butterfly lifespan is only about two weeks, as they use most of their energy looking for love. Butterflies find energy in their short life by sipping nectar from flowers.

Learn

The Painted Lady caterpillar isn’t a picky eater. With a menu of over 100 plant varieties, it happily feasts on a wide range of leaves, including many some consider weeds: Mallow, Thistle, Plantain, Dandelion – you name it. Wings of Change supporting members received Desert Globe Mallow seeds this month to give these stunning creatures a helping hand. Desert Globe Mallow is a vibrant and hardy perennial plant native to the southwestern United States. It is known for its beautiful orange, red, or pink hibiscus-like flowers. It thrives in hot and arid climates, making it a popular choice for xeriscaping. This low-growing shrub requires minimal water making it a low-maintenance garden addition.

Grow

Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui)

And here’s a quick gardening tip: the Globe mallow loves basking in full sunlight and should be planted with plenty of room to grow into a beautiful, bush-spreading plant. Plant with CA Poppies, buckwheat, black sage, or our native seed mixes to create a pollinator habitat. We have seeds available on our website for a limited time. So, let’s roll up our sleeves and get planting!

Change

To encourage change and support the Painted Lady(Vanessa cardui) the step is simple, plant our seed of the month, Desert Mallow, or allow the “weeds” to exist. Could you tell your friends and neighbors? Together we are spreading the word about the importance of butterflies. We invite you to LEARN. GROW. CHANGE. Please support our nonprofit and help spread the word about the importance of butterflies. Become a member today.  Together we are Wings of Change, creating a butterfly effect.
