Wings of Change is spreading the word about the importance of butterflies and pollinators worldwide. We help educate the community on how butterflies affect everything, including fire safety, drought tolerance, and our health!
Butterflies play a crucial role in ecosystems. They are keystone species, equally in importance as bees. At the same time they serve as pollinators and are a food source for various species. Scientists use butterflies to understand habitat loss and climate change.
We invite you to LEARN, GROW, and CHANGE with us.
Our Mission
Teach about plant species needed to support butterflies. These plants will provide a balanced landscape, which improves drought resistance, and fire safety. Not only do these native plants require less water, but they also attract and provide critical habitat to all of our native species, including butterflies and other pollinators.
Learn
The first step in butterfly conservation is to learn about butterflies and moths. They are keystone species, next in importance after bees. They are an indication of a healthy ecosystem. This means that the soils, plants, and overall environment can thrive. To continue to learn how you can help with conservation, check out our Events page.
Grow
Once we learn, we can start to grow. Both figuratively and literally. Building your own butterfly garden isn't difficult, plant them and they will come. Make sure to select plants and flowers that are native to your local area as those are the ones the butterflies need along their migration paths. You can get started with some quality plants and seeds in our shop.
Change
Butterfly conservation goes beyond building the perfect butterfly garden. We must do our part to build a better environment and encourage others to do the same. If you want more tips on the small changes you can make throughout your day to make our world a healthier place, sign up for our blog get your get, and become a member.
Meet The Founder
Wings of Change was founded in 2020 and officially became a nonprofit in 2021 by Stephanie Holbrook. Stephanie, a California native, inherited her love for flowers, butterflies, and birds from her mother Pam and grandmother Marilu, both of whom taught her gardening skills at a young age. Stephanie’s passion for nature was further nurtured during summers spent with her Grandmother Marilu, who worked at the San Diego County Flower and Plant Association in Encinitas, CA. Following her grandmother’s passing in 2001, the San Diego County Flower and Plant Association dedicated their scholarship fund in her honor. Stephanie’s career path in retail management was greatly influenced by her early experiences with her grandmother in the garden. Stephanie’s deep connection to San Diego is also rooted in her Native American heritage, with her forefather associated with the San Diego Mission de Alcala.
As her family grew, Stephanie stepped away from her career in retail management and opened her local business, Go To Crew. This allowed Stephanie the flexibility needed to be a homeschool mom for 10 years.
Always eager to give back to the community, Stephanie was involved in Boy Scouts of America Troop 731, her local church North Coast, Fallbrook Land Conservancy, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. This same level of community awareness and a desire to heal our planet led to Stephanie creating a butterfly garden while volunteering in the PTA, during her son’s kindergarten year. The school was just a few blocks from their home and Stephanie spent hours researching local butterflies and how to create homes for caterpillars at the school and in her home garden. The seeds were sown for “Wings of Change”.
Our Founder and her #1 Supporter
Stephanie
Our founder, Stephanie is ¼ Native American with forefathers whose roots date back to Mission San Diego de Alcala.
She promotes plants that were a part of those tribal times, the missing threads of our unbalanced ecosystem.
In partnership with her existing business, the Go to Crew, Stephanie grew Wings of Change to include backyard butterfly gardens, butterfly conservation education, and even more community involvement. Stephanie, through Wings of Change, is an ambassador for the local Fallbrook Food Pantry, works with the Mission Resource Conservation District, is a volunteer with the Fallbrook Land Conservancy, and also works with Save Our Forest and Fallbrook Beautification Alliance. We are thrilled to be partners with the San Diego Audubon Society, and the San Diego Pollinators Alliance.
Wings of Change strives to bring awareness to the importance of the butterfly in our ecosystem and educate the public on what they can do to make sure we protect the species and create habitat for all creatures!
In 1868, John Muir dubbed the Sierra Nevada in California the “Range of Light.” Unfortunately, many plants he loved were labeled as weeds, leaving many keystone species endangered.
Hopefully, with continued education, we will once again live in a place our elders spoke of, where butterflies were so plentiful that they would come in clouds that could be touched, even sometimes landing upon you. We invite you to LEARN, GROW AND CHANGE with us. Together we are Wings of Change
