Deerweed (Acmispon glaber) is our seed of the MoMonth for January 2023. This southwestern native

We’re passionate about the environment and how butterflies play a vital role in maintaining balance. Wings of Change is a nonprofit organization that aims to restore natural cycles by creating an ecological landscape using plants.

Deerweed (Acmispon glaber) is a drought-tolerant perennial herb that is excellent for hot, sunny, dry spots. It can grow up to 3 ft. by 3 ft. and is native to Western California and northern Baja California and is considered a Pioneer Species (read below to learn more). Small yellow flowers tinged with orange will bloom from March through August. As the name suggests, it will attract deer which are keystone species as they play a crucial role in a healthy ecosystem. Deerweed (Acmispon glaber) attracts a variety of pollinators, especially hummingbirds and it is a host plant to up to 16 caterpillars including the Orange Sulphur Butterfly, our Butterfly of the Month January 2023.

Deerweed (Acmispon glaber) will work well with many other drought-tolerant plants, especially lupines, and clovers.  Keep in mind when companion planting that Deerweed will only require summer irrigation of 1 time per month, prefers sandy soil and full sun.

Deerweed (Acmispon glaber) will thrive without water!  This perennial herb will do well in most of California, Arizona, and Baja California and tends to grow in sandy washes and desert slopes. It is considered a Pioneer Species, a species that initiates the development of an ecological community in an area with currently no life form existence. YES! A seed that can be scattered in a barren land and help restore habitat, WINNING!
