Deerweed (Acmispon glaber) is a drought-tolerant perennial herb that is excellent for hot, sunny, dry spots in the garden. It can grow up to 3 ft. by 3 ft. and is native to California, Arizona, and Northern Mexico. Small yellow flowers tinged with orange will bloom from March through August. It attracts a variety of pollinators, especially hummingbirds and it is a host plant to up to 16 caterpillars including the Orange Sulphur Butterfly, our Butterfly of the Month January 2023.
Deerweed (Acmispon glaber) will work well with many other drought tolerant plants, especially lupines, and clovers. Keep in mind when companion planting that Deerweed will only require summer irrigation of 1 time per month.
