Control Mosquitos, No-see-ums, and Lawn Pests, Naturally

Control Mosquitos, Gnats and Lawn Insects

Fleas, mosquitos, and flying gnats! How can you lay down on the grass and read a book if the grass is buzzing? Animals prefer a no bug zone as well. It’s beneficial to everyone and everything involved. Keep reading to see how you can make your own lawn, insect, and weed control in an eco-friendly version!

Even so, it’s better to pull weeds than to spray it with weed killer because it gets rid of the entire weed without harming the surrounding area. You pull all parts of the weed completely out to ensure that it won’t return. Spraying weed killers or herbicides can seep into the ground and affect the nearby vegetation that you don’t want to get rid of.

You should think green and natural if you choose to spray your yard to remove pests and insects. Herbicides are a huge NO! They kill plants by causing a buildup of toxic substances. Therefore, your goal may be to kill insects, but you are actually damaging the entire surrounding environment.

Most of the time we prefer to let nature do its thing, and leave the bugs to do their thing. However sometimes some pests can get out of hand. That’s when we turn to a castile soap. If you spray the castile soap mixture on an insect with a soft outer membrane it will desiccate it and cause it to dry out. This spray will not have any effect on insects with hard exoskeletons like ladybugs, or beetles. To create your own insecticidal soap you’ll only need two ingredients: castile soap and water. The dilution rate is 1 TBSP/quart or 4 TBSP/gallon of water. I prefer to use a hose-end sprayer. Remember, it will kill anything that comes in direct, contact with so be careful not to hurt the good bugs.

When keeping your lawn insects under control, you should NEVER use Raid or any other poisons. Here are a few reasons why:

  • It’s cheaper to make your own natural remedies for those pesky insects, and you are also doing the environment a huge favor. Any store-bought organic chemical will easily cost you $40.00. Why spend all that money when you can make it for way less? When you make natural insect control, it’s greener for the environment because you don’t have empty plastic containers and bottles that need to be disposed of after use. In addition, you don’t have to make a trip to deliver, buy, or sell it! – less carbon footprint and less money on gas. It’s a win-win!

  • The biggest reason you should choose natural insect control over chemicals like Raid is it’s POISON! DUH! It runs into our waterways, our puddles, and seeps into our ground. We don’t need it – Mother Earth gave us all we need to keep her well. Let’s use it!

When spraying your lawn with all-natural insect control, you will still need to be aware of the areas you are spraying. You can simply use a spray bottle with a hose-end sprayer to target the infected area. You wouldn’t want to spray and eliminate a beautiful butterfly habitat in the process though, would you? Always be aware of the surrounding area that could be affected.
